For over sixty years the gentle Los Medanos Hills north of Concord, CA were the site of the Concord Naval Weapons Station, a storage and supply depot for military activities. Now the land is being returned to the city and to the East Bay Regional Park District and much of it will become part of new regional park.

On a short hike up a nearby hillside I found marvelous vistas of Mount Diablo to the south and Suisun Bay and the Delta to the north. These grassy windswept hills will eventually be part of protected greenbelt stretching all the way from the Bay to Eastern Contra Costa.

Development is still a threat to some of these lands, however, and conservation agencies such as Save Mount Diablo are working hard to limit growth and protect vulnerable ridge lines and habitat.
